In the last assembly election, Datta Bahirat lost to BJP’s Siddhart Shirole by just 5,000 votes. With elections coming up on November 20, voters in Shivaji Nagar are sharing their concerns.
A report from Free Press Journal captured the voices of local residents. Satyajeet Sai Pawar, an IT worker in Hinjawadi, mentioned that traffic jams are a big problem. He believes this is mostly due to the ongoing construction of a flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk. He pointed out that despite diversions, the situation has not improved. He called for quick completion of the project, noting that construction debris is making the roads unsafe.
Arun Kuradkar, an auto driver from Wadarwadi, shared his thoughts as well. He has lived in Shivaji Nagar for many years. He acknowledged some improvements in drainage and water supply but said traffic remains a major issue. He feels it’s hard to predict the election outcome since both candidates seem capable.
Vishwajeet Bhalerao, a local shopkeeper, echoed similar sentiments. He recalled how close the last election was, with Datta Bahirat losing by just 5,000 votes. He thinks this election may also be tight. His family will vote based on the state of roads, water supply, and drainage over the past five years. He believes traffic, drainage, and rising prices are key issues voters are discussing.
Activist Nirmala Vidyarthi spoke about environmental concerns regarding Vetal Tekdi. She emphasized the need for the government to make wise choices regarding this sensitive issue. Meanwhile, MLA Siddharth Shirole expressed confidence in his work over the past five years. He believes voters will not be misled by the opposition’s claims.
Shirole mentioned the benefits of the Pune Metro in easing traffic. He said ten metro stations are in the constituency, with a line to Hinjawadi almost finished. The new metro corridor will provide thirty additional stations for residents.
He also stated that the flyover construction at Pune University Chowk is going quickly and should be done by January. Shirole highlighted that the Ladki Bahin Scheme will be a significant improvement. Plans for widening the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway and expanding under-bridges at Khadki and Range Hills are also in the works. The Pune Municipal Corporation has set aside funds for these projects, which include a new bus station alongside the metro.
